Garden Update: Plenty of Oregano and New Tomato Seedlings
Posted under:
Gardening
It's raining a little today, so my plants are loving it - no sun beating down on them to make them wilt and plenty of water. The basil seedlings have shot up in the past week or two, soon I'll be able to start picking off leaves to put on my pizzas.
The capsicums are much less convoluted and tiny than the first harvest were - there's another one behind that's nearly as big. Hopefully soon they'll start going red and I'll pick one. :)
As per usual, oregano is having a party, the parsley is a little less enthused but I suspect it'll pick up with the cooler weather and rain.
These are the rocket seedlings all (nearly) grown up, you can still see the little ones next to them, they weren't thriving in the other potting mix (too well drained), so I dug up the catgrass and planted them in here. They've already got new leaves so they must like the new spot.
Here's the spinach, it doesn't look like any variety I've seen before but I had some in risotto cakes and it tasted fine. :) It's a touch droopy but the rain will perk it up, I was going to go out and water it but the sky took care of it for me. Apparently spinach isn't great grown in summer, it goes to seed very quickly (which was the case here), but I've been pinching off the seedheads and using the leaves. I think soon I'll just pick them all and blanch/freeze them, then dig up the plants and try something else. I've got some climbing bean seeds, I might move things around so it can be against the balcony fence and try growing them next.
As you may tell by the ominous gap behind the basil, the remaining tomato plant finally gave out (after two years of faithful service). I have a packet of mixed gourmet seeds, including a yellow 'Pineapple' variety and a purple one, this is the first of the seedlings to pop up but I didn't label them so it'll be a nice surprise finding out which is which. :) So tell me, Mary Quite Contrary, how does your garden grow?
